<\/span>Our story yesterday turned the spotlight on GE\u2019s R&D<\/a> and the way in which sustained technology investments, even in an economic downturn, translate into new products with huge potential. As described in GE\u2019s just-released online Annual Report<\/a>, new product introductions are one side of the equation. The other is how technologies and solutions get deployed in the field by customers such as AEP, one of the largest investor-owned utilities. As Tom Jones, Research Program Manager for AEP, says in the video below about their smart grid project: \u201cGE really understands the customer. We understand the utility system — what it takes to supply customers. The two come together to make a really good team.\u201d Adds Ray Hayes, Advanced Testing Manager for AEP: \u201cThis is a great time for the American utility industry. There\u2019s so much opportunity to look into new technologies. To be able to be part of the birth of the next generation of that grid, it\u2019s very exciting.\u201d

Smart grid solutions such as this are part of GE\u2019s efforts to tackle \u201cthe stubborn problems of energy efficiency,\u201d as GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt writes in this year\u2019s Annual Report. \u201cGE always takes a \u2018systems approach\u2019 to problem solving, applying innovative solutions to customer and societal needs,\u201d he writes, and \u201ctechnology is the key to a clean energy future. Last year, we made substantial investments to commercialize smart grid solutions, sodium and lithium battery technology, offshore wind, smart appliances and multi-fuel gas turbines.\u201d Combined with investments in a \u201cnew generation of nuclear reactors and clean coal technology,\u201d the innovations together will not only provide comprehensive solutions to customers — from giant utilities to individual homeowners — they\u2019ll also \u201cfacilitate energy security and job creation,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n
