Officers from the Bell Police Department, who had responded to a report of a man with a gun, tried unsuccessfully to persuade the suspect to exit the home, said sheriff&#8217;s spokesman Steve Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Bell police called a sheriff&#8217;s SWAT team, which responded with an armored vehicle carrier.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;As we were staging, the suspect exited the front door armed with a handgun and began to advance in the direction of the deputies,&quot; Whitmore said. &quot;Fearing for safety, one of the deputies opened fire.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Whitmore said a .45-caliber handgun was recovered from the scene.
