Camara will remain in Burkina Faso.<\/a><br \/>Originally uploaded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/people\/53911892@N00\/\">Pan-African News Wire File Photos<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Sunday, March 07, 2010<br \/>23:21 Mecca time, 20:21 GMT<\/p>\n<p>Guinea sets presidential poll date<\/p>\n<p>Camara is recovering in Burkina Faso after an attempt on his life by a<br \/>close aide<\/p>\n<p>Guinea&#8217;s rulers have said they country will hold a presidential<br \/>election on June 27, the first since a military coup in December last<br \/>year.<\/p>\n<p>The main electoral commission proposed the date last month and the decree was signed by General Sekouba Konate, the country&#8217;s interim leader on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The transition president, [the] interim president of the republic,<br \/>sets the date of the first round of the presidential election for June<br \/>27,&#8221; the decree said.<\/p>\n<p>The commission said a second round should be held on July 18 if no candidate got an absolute majority.<\/p>\n<p>It also proposed that campaigning run from May 17 to June 26.<\/p>\n<p>Military coup<\/p>\n<p>The interim government was established with the help of international mediators in the wake of an assassination attempt on Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, the then-leader of the country&#8217;s military government.<\/p>\n<p>Camara, who was shot in the head by an aide, is recuperating in<br \/>neighbouring Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the assassination attempt Guinea had been thrown into<br \/>political turmoil when a security force crackdown on September 28 saw the massacre of 156 protesters.<\/p>\n<p>A United Nations report released in December blamed Camara for the massacre.<\/p>\n<p>The killings occurred as opposition supporters staged a rally amid<br \/>concerns that Camara &#8211; who seized power in 2008 after the death of<br \/>Lansana Conte, Guinea&#8217;s long-time ruler &#8211; was planning to renege on a pledge to hold civilian elections.<\/p>\n<p>Besides scores who died after soldiers opened fire in the city&#8217;s main<br \/>sports stadium, more than 100 women were reportedly raped during the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Agencies<br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img width='1' height='1' src='https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/16711557-1396540644685601449?l=panafricannews.blogspot.com' alt='' \/><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Moussa Dadis Camara, former leader of the coup in Guinea, along with current military leader and the head of state in Burkina Faso when they agreed to allow elections to go forward without Camara.
