It looks like the cost of <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.usa.gov\/cgi-bin\/gsa_ict.cfg\/php\/enduser\/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5647&amp;p\" title=\"obtain renew\">obtaining \/ renewing a passport<\/a> is going to go up. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\" title=\"state dept\">State Department<\/a> is proposing a fee hike that would raise the cost of applying for a passport from $100 to $135, and renewal cost would increase to $110 from the current $75.<\/p>\n<p>The reason? The State Department says that the costs of increased security and anti-fraud and terrorism measures aren&#8217;t being covered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/TRAVEL\/03\/04\/passport.fees\/index.html?iref=allsearch\" title=\" current fee\">current fees<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Besides this just seeming like yet another rising cost that is annoying to deal with, some lawmakers worry that overall it will hurt the tourism industry- particularly to neighboring countries of Canada and Mexico. They worry that the increased burden will deter Americans from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.gov\/Citizen\/Topics\/Travel.shtml\" title=\"travel\">traveling<\/a> and in turn, continue to hurt the economy.<\/p>\n<p>While the increase is not yet final, it could be in effect by April.
