The tools which are used in machining cast workpieces score points primarily in terms of efficiency, as they complete two processes in one.

The challenge for tools whose aim it is to carry out roughing and ream-ing in one process lies in achieving the required roundness and coaxi-ality, given the high stock-removing capacity and accompanying forces. For this reason, such tools are usually equipped with guide rails, which could, however, lead to problems in the machining proc-ess. Typically for KOMET®, the development of the new roughing and finishing tools for cast workpieces is based on an indexable insert innovation, which enables not only roughing but also reaming using the economical, multi-blade plank. Thanks to the innovative cutting insert geometry using support chamfers, the old guide rails are no longer required.

In addition, the two features of replaceable cutting inserts and multi-blade indexable inserts (familiar to the field of counterboring) increase both efficiency and flexibility even in finishing tools, compared to tradi-tional reamers with soldered cutters. Furthermore, the adjustable na-ture of the indexable inserts allows micro-precision adjustments.

The tools are manufactured with four to six cutters on a basic body, depending on the application, and for length/diameter ratios of up to 5xD. With various cutting material/coating variants they can also be perfectly adapted to the customer’s requirements, depending on the material. For example, in GG50 the tools work in cutting depths (ap) of three to four millimetres, whereas under good machine conditions IT7 tolerances are possible.

The KOMET GROUP® is introducing a completely redesigned roughing and finishing tool programme.
