{"id":411295,"date":"2010-03-10T01:00:40","date_gmt":"2010-03-10T05:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/?p=11615"},"modified":"2010-03-10T01:00:40","modified_gmt":"2010-03-10T05:00:40","slug":"do-the-germans-still-owe-the-greeks-70-billion-euros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/411295","title":{"rendered":"Do the Germans Still Owe the Greeks $70 Billion Euros?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Julian Ku <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amid the <a  href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/8536862.stm\">war of words<\/a> between Germans and Greeks over a possible Greek bailout, the Deputy Prime Minister of Greece has accused the Germans of stealing &#8220;the Greek gold that was in the Bank of Greece, they took away the Greek money and they never gave it back&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0This was part of the reason why Greeks (presumably the ones now boycotting German goods) are not exactly feeling grateful to Germany for possibly bailing out their troubled public finances. \u00a0As I understand it, some Greeks have maintained claims against Germany for wartime abuses and thefts. Germany&#8217;s response, I believe, is to cite the 1960 FRG-Greece treaty as <a  href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/news\/2010-02-26\/greece-says-german-war-crimes-spat-won-t-derail-deficit-efforts.html\">a final settlement<\/a> of all such war-related claims.
