Yucky — but for a good cause: On Wednesday, The Early Show’s<\/em> Harry Smith became the first news anchor to undergo a colonoscopy on network TV. <\/p>\n

CBS Evening News<\/em> anchor Katie Couric was with Smith as Dr. Mark Pochapin performed the colonoscopy at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital\/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Harry and Katie are recognizing National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, which urges early detection as the most vital tool in the fight against the deadly disease. The cause is one close to Katie’s heart; she lost her husband Jay Monahan to colorectal cancer in 1998.<\/p>\n

In March 2000, Couric launched the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance.<\/p>\n
