Actor Corey Haim, who was pronounced dead at a Burbank hospital early Wednesday morning, likely died of an accidental overdose involving prescription drugs, law enforcement sources told The Times.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old actor<\/a>, best known for his role in the movie "The Lost Boys," was taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center after
\nbeing found unresponsive at his home. He was officially pronounced dead
\nat 3 a.m. at the hospital. <\/p>\n

Sources familiar with the death investigation — who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing —\u00a0 said detectives recovered prescription drugs<\/a> from the home. It did not appear that foul play or illegal drugs were involved, the sources said.<\/p>\n

Even so, they stressed that the investigation, which is now being handled by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, will take weeks to determine an official cause of death. In addition to an autopsy, the coroner will conduct toxicology tests that take six to eight weeks to complete.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Police learned of Haim’s death when staff at the hospital called authorities between 4 and 4:30 a.m., said Sgt. Frank Albarren of the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Station.<\/p>\n

"It was an apparent overdose,” Albarren told reporters. "Unknown what type of medication."<\/p>\n

The coroner’s office is also handling the death investigation after
\ntaking over from Los Angeles police detectives, who determined there was
\n no foul play.<\/p>\n

Haim also starred in "Lucas" and appeared in other movies as a child but had struggled with drugs as an adult. He recently starred in a reality TV show focusing on his efforts to restart his acting career.<\/p>\n
