It cuts deeper (and funnier) than Calvin Trillin&#8217;s recent New Yorker piece on Chang, which was told from a bemused distance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beth Ann Fennelly<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordamerican.org\/articles\/2010\/mar\/09\/wide-world-eating-dirt\/\">writes about the widespread practice of geophagy<\/a>, or dirt eating, that is particularly prevalent in the rural poor South. Ever see those little packages of white kaolin sold at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market produce stands?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Warwick Sabin<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordamerican.org\/articles\/2010\/mar\/08\/rich-get-thinner-poor-get-fatter\/\">ponders the reasons why the obesity epidemic affects the Southern poor<\/a> so disproportionately. The &#8220;fresh, local food&#8221; now so in vogue is becoming a luxury item, the author argues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon Reynolds<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordamerican.org\/articles\/2010\/mar\/08\/brandon-reynolds-finds-southern-meals-la-wheels\/\">looks at the Mattie&#8217;s Southern &#0133;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The annual Oxford American Food Issue is now out on newsstands.\u00a0 (We all remember what those are, right?)
