As reported by (the appropriately named) David Hammer in the New Orleans Times-Picayune<\/em> on Monday, today is the deadline<\/a> for applications by Louisiana homeowners\u00a0to secure extra\u00a0construction aid from the Road Home program<\/a>. These grants of up to $100,000<\/strong> are available to those who had\u00a0selected "Option 1" under the original\u00a0Road Home grant process,\u00a0and can be used for\u00a0additional repairs. Today is also the deadline for the Individual Mitigation Measures program, which is administered separately from Road Home.<\/p>\n

Road Home was established to provide funding for rehabilitation of homes damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The State of Louisiana\u00a0was given\u00a0more than $10 billion\u00a0by the\u00a0Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)\u00a0to establish Road Home.\u00a0Eligible homeowners received<\/a> as much as\u00a0$150,000 from the original budget to cover repair costs. In addition, the program provided support for owners of rental properties <\/a>and training opportunities for contractors and engineers<\/a> contributing to\u00a0the massive rebuilding effort.<\/p>\n

Using funds from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), Louisiana launched<\/a> the Individual Mitigation Measures program, which provides up to $7,500 for homeowners to complete storm-resistant improvements<\/strong> like\u00a0shutter installation, elevation of air conditioning units, and anchoring of heating fuel tanks. All together, more than $850 million was spent on home elevation in the four years after Katrina, boosting construction sector jobs and muting the effects of the nationwide housing downturn in Louisiana until recently<\/a>.<\/p>\n
