{"id":415790,"date":"2010-03-11T10:22:13","date_gmt":"2010-03-11T15:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.egmcartech.com\/?p=52838"},"modified":"2010-03-11T10:22:13","modified_gmt":"2010-03-11T15:22:13","slug":"highway-fatalities-drop-8-9-in-2009-reach-lowest-level-since-1954","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/415790","title":{"rendered":"Highway fatalities drop 8.9% in 2009, reach lowest level since 1954"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52839 aligncenter\" title=\"Highway\" src=\"http:\/\/www.egmcartech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/highway_image_main_a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation announced today that the number of overall traffic fatalities reported at the end of 2009 reached the lowest level since 1954, declining for the 15th consecutive quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exciting news, but there are still far too many people dying in traffic accidents,\u201d said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. \u201cDrivers need to keep their hands on the steering wheel and their focus on the road in order to stay safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DOT said that the projected fatality data for 2009 places the highway death count at 33,963, a drop of 8.9 percent as compared to the 37,261 deaths reported in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-52838\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis continuing decline in highway deaths is encouraging, but our work is far from over,\u201d said National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland. \u201cWe want to see those numbers drop further.
