The American Petroleum Institute is running <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/08\/big-oil-carbon-fee\">full-page ads<\/a> in Politico and Roll Call that attack Congress for &#8220;new energy taxes&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Congress will likely consider new taxes on America&#8217;s oil and natural gas industry. These new energy taxes will produce wide-reaching effects, and ripple through our economy when America &#8212; and Americans &#8212; can least afford it.<\/p>\n<p>These unprecedented taxes will serve to reduce investment in new energy supplies at a time when most Americans support developing our domestic oil and natural gas resources. That means less energy, thousands of American jobs being lost and further erosion of our energy security. <\/p>\n<p>Our economy is in crisis, and we need to get the nation on the road to economic recovery. <strong>This is no time to burden Americans with new energy costs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href='http:\/\/energytomorrow.org\/energy_taxes.aspx'>target of this ad<\/a>  is the <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2009\/03\/big_oil_misers.html\">Obama administration&#8217;s effort<\/a> to remove <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/obama-tries-to-cut-oil-and-natural-gas-subsidies-again-2010-2\">$36 billion in loopholes<\/a> and <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/cleantech.com\/news\/node\/554\">subsidies for the oil industry<\/a>. As it turns out, the &#8220;Americans&#8221; presented in the ad are stock photos from Getty Images:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/sb10069427k-002\/Iconica\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/api_stockperson_1.png\" alt=\"API stockphoto\" title=\"API stockphoto\" width=\"313\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85906\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/72737544\/Image-Source\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/api_stockperson_2.png\" alt=\"API stockperson\" title=\"API stockperson\" width=\"461\" height=\"179\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85907\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/84545435\/Stone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/api_stockperson_3.png\" alt=\"API stockperson\" title=\"API stockperson\" width=\"306\" height=\"181\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85908\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href='http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/82650233\/Iconica'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/api_stockperson_4.png\" alt=\"API stockperson \" title=\"API stockperson \" width=\"312\" height=\"182\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Americans are <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icta.org\/doc\/Real%20Price%20of%20Gasoline.pdf\">paying the price<\/a> for these subsidies with our tax dollars, our health, and our national security. Removing these subsidies would &#8220;ripple through the economy&#8221; by <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/10\/inslee-unleash-economy\/\">unleashing a clean-energy future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is just the latest in a stream of polluter front groups using stock photos in Astroturf campaigns against clean energy policy. API was recently caught trying to add diversity to its dirty ads by <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href='http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/10\/oil-lobby-stock\/'>photoshopping minorities into stock photography<\/a>. West Virginia&#8217;s &#8220;<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2009\/08\/27\/faces-of-adfero\/\">FACES of Coal<\/a>&#8221; turned out to be from <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.appvoices.org\/index.php?\/frontporch\/blogposts\/farces_of_coals_fake_supporters\/\">iStockPhoto.com<\/a>. Con Res. 248, a privileged resolution brought to the floor by Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Walter Jones (R-NC), and others that required Congress to debate whether or not to continue the war in Afghanistan.  During one point in the debate, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) delivered an impassioned [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Today, the House of Representatives is debating <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/kucinich.house.gov\/UploadedFiles\/Kucinich_Afghanistan_Resolution.pdf\">H. Con Res. 248<\/a>, a <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/view\/2010\/03\/05-3\">privileged resolution<\/a> brought to the floor by Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Walter Jones (R-NC), and others that required Congress to debate whether or not to continue the war in Afghanistan. <\/p>\n<p>During one point in the debate, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) delivered an <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7cbZK07KuDE\">impassioned speech<\/a> against escalating in Afghanistan and condemned the media for its wall-to-wall coverage of the scandal surrounding former Rep. Eric Massa while ignoring the Afghanistan debate in Congress:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>KENNEDY: What is shameful is our policy that puts them in harm&#8217;s way when they don&#8217;t need to be &#8230; Finally, if anyone wants to know where citizens are, there&#8217;s two pres people in this gallery. <strong>We&#8217;re talking about Eric Massa 24-7 on the TV, we&#8217;re talking about war and peace, $3 billion, 1,000 lives and no press, you want to know why the American public is fit?<\/strong> They&#8217;re fit because they&#8217;re not seeing their Congress do the work they&#8217;re sent to do. Crowley mused that it could be argued &#8220;one way or another&#8221; whether the Massa scandal was as important as debating the war in Afghanistan, and even suggested that Kennedy made his speech because &#8220;the Democrats in particular and certainly&#8230;Kennedy would <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-l64KjfZkL4&#038;feature=player_embedded\">like the Massa story to go away<\/a>&#8220;: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>CROWLEY: I think think it is one that &#8212; what he is arguing &#8212; is that it is one of perspective and [he] obviously believes that Massa&#8217;s been given too much attention where the war in Afghanistan is not. <strong>You know, we could argue one way or the other, but it is very clear that he &#8211;the Democrats in particular and certainly Congressman Kennedy in specific would like the Massa story to go away.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Watch it:<\/p>\n<p><center><object width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/-l64KjfZkL4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/-l64KjfZkL4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><\/embed><\/object><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Given that <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/icasualties.org\/oef\/\">895 American soldiers<\/a> have died in combat in Afghanistan and the U.S. is spending <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/foreign-policy\/73515-christmas-eve-is-the-3000th-day-in-afghanistan-and-30th-anniversary-of-the-russian-invasion-rep-eric-massa\">$101 million a day<\/a> on the war &#8212; which has lasted l<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/12\/24\/afghanistan-3000\/\">onger that World War II<\/a> &#8212; there are plenty of good reasons for Congressional Democrats to be debating an exit strategy from Afghanistan other than to distract from a minor scandal. <\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American Petroleum Institute Uses Stock Photos Of ?Americans?
