{"id":416705,"date":"2010-03-11T10:25:45","date_gmt":"2010-03-11T14:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"11528 at http:\/\/www.wri.org"},"modified":"2010-03-11T10:25:45","modified_gmt":"2010-03-11T14:25:45","slug":"former-swedish-prime-minister-goran-persson-joins-wri-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/416705","title":{"rendered":"Former Swedish Prime Minister  G\u00f6ran Persson Joins WRI Board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Also <a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/WRI_News_and_Views\/~3\/EW3pcm3VY8s\/former-swedish-prime-minister-goeran-persson-joins-wri-board#swedish\">available in Swedish<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Prime Minister of Sweden <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G%C3%B6ran_Persson\">G\u00f6ran Persson<\/a> has been elected to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/about\/board\">Board of Directors<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\">World Resources Institute (WRI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrime Minister Persson\u2019s record of building long-term and ambitious environmental policies is exceptional,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/profile\/jonathan-lash\">Jonathan Lash<\/a>, WRI president. \u201cFacing the most important challenge of our time \u2013 climate change \u2013 he has led by example and helped Sweden go further than required by the Kyoto Protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Persson served as prime minister from 1996 to 2006. He led the reduction in Sweden\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions by 13.5 percent between 1996 and 2005, and set a national target to reduce emissions to 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020. In 2007, he was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sofieprisen.no\/Articles\/214.html\">Sophie Prize<\/a> for his leadership on climate policy. Prior to serving as Prime Minister, he served as finance and education minister, as a member of parliament, and was a local politician.<\/p>\n<p>Persson serves as chairman of three other boards: <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=sv&amp;u=http:\/\/www.allabolag.se\/5566758107&amp;ei=ejWQS8KIG5ng8AbksOD2BA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBMQ7gEwAA&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3DScandinavian%2BAir%2BAmbulance%2BHolding%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1C1CHNG_enUS\">Scandinavian Air Ambulance Holding<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=sv&amp;u=http:\/\/www.scandinavianbiogas.se\/&amp;ei=lTWQS52kFIXR8Qb5hd2oBQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CAgQ7gEwAA&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3DScandinavian%2BBiogas%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1C1CHNG_enUS354US354\">Scandinavian Biogas<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sveaskog.se\/en\/\">Sveaskog<\/a>, which is Sweden\u2019s largest forest owner and leading supplier of timber, pulpwood, and biofuel. The company is government-owned and uses sustainable management methods in which forest lands are grown faster than they are felled. It is also one of the largest forest owners in all of Europe. G\u00f6ran Persson, som var statsminister fr\u00e5n 1996 till 2006, tilldelades \u00e5r <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sofieprisen.no\/Articles\/214.html\">2007 Sofie-priset<\/a> f\u00f6r sitt klimatpolitiska ledarskap.<\/p>\n<p>I styrelsen blir G\u00f6ran Persson kollega med bland andra USAs f\u00f6rre vicepresident Al Gore, Unilevers f\u00f6rre ordf\u00f6rande Antony Burgmans och Brasiliens f\u00f6rre president Fernando Henrique Cardoso. WRI har 200 medarbetare i Washington DC och samarbetar aktivt med myndigheter, f\u00f6retag och milj\u00f6organisationer \u00f6ver hela v\u00e4rlden f\u00f6r att oms\u00e4tta kunskap i handling. WRI har nyligen utn\u00e4mnts till en av v\u00e4rldens b\u00e4sta milj\u00f6politiska tankesmedjor av University of Pennsylvania.
