It\u2019s Journalism 101: who, what, when, where and why, as in, \u201cWho are you wearing?\u201d [&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Susan Kaufman, editor of People StyleWatch, said she lost it when Mr. Seacrest didn\u2019t immediately quiz an elegant-looking Sandra Bullock \u2014 who would later win as Best Actress \u2014 about her shimmery frock (by Marchesa). \u201cI\u2019m screaming at the TV: \u2018Ask her who\u2019s she wearing!\u2019 \u201d Ms. Kaufman said. \u201cI was so angry, my husband was laughing at me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2176\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Different versions of the same question come up in Elizabeth Wellington, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/inquirer\/magazine\/87197822.html\">Mirror, Mirror: So, E!, whatever happened to &#8216;Who are you wearing&#8217;?<\/a>&#8220;, Philadelphia Inquirer 2\/10\/2010:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Erica Salmon, president of Mullica Hill-based Red Carpet MVP (formerly the Fantasy Fashion League), wholeheartedly agreed. In the online game that mirrors fantasy football, points are awarded for how many times designers&#8217; names are mentioned by the media during red carpet season. The Oscars are the championship game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t just use E! anymore,&#8221; said Salmon, who has been forced to use InStyle.com because E! didn&#8217;t give her players enough information. &#8220;Sometimes I wish I had a direct line to Ryan&#8217;s mike and I&#8217;d say, &#8216;Dude, please ask who are they wearing?&#8217; &#8221; Salmon said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what we need to know.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And dozens of other news outlets are <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news\/search?pz=1&amp;cf=all&amp;ned=us&amp;hl=en&amp;q=%22who+are+you+wearing%22\">discussing the same question<\/a>, as they&#8217;ve been doing <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/archivesearch?q=%22who+are+you+wearing%22&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;btnG=Search+Archives\">more and more often over the years<\/a> (about 35 times more often than <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/archivesearch?q=%22who+are+you+reading%22&amp;btnG=Search+Archives&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;scoring=a\">&#8220;Who are you reading?&#8221;<\/a>, apparently). The earliest example in Google&#8217;s news archive is &#8220;Red Carpet, Big Smiles, Tight Security&#8221;, San Jose Mercury News, 3\/26\/1991:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peggy Lipton, Dianne Wiest and a buxom Egyptian model named Kelli fielded the evening&#8217;s most pressing question: &#8220;Who are you wearing?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, a search in ProQuest&#8217;s Historical Newspaper Archive turns up Genevieve Buck, &#8220;Chili, Bud kick off Chicago fashions&#8221;, Chicago Tribune 4\/11\/1984:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Who are you wearing?&#8221; turned out to be the game of the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So (pending Ben Zimmer&#8217;s discovery of a citation in Elizabeth Barrett Browning&#8217;s diary) it appears that this is an expression that emerged in the 1980s in a general fashion-show context, and became a touchstone of Oscar-night reportage at some point over the past decade or two.<\/p>\n<p>It also turns out that <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/tv\/2008\/08\/22\/2008-08-22_who_are_you_wearing_is_a_good_fit_for_re.html\">Who Are You Wearing?<\/a><\/em> was a reality TV show, as of a couple of years ago.
