Thompson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/story\/second-figure-charged-in-post-katrina-police-shootings\/\">ProPublica<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>A second former New Orleans Police Department officer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/index.ssf\/2010\/03\/second_former_new_orleans_poli.html\">has been charged in federal court<\/a><br \/>\nin connection with the Sept. 4, 2005 shootings on the Danziger Bridge.<br \/>\nJeffrey Lehrmann, who left the NOPD to work for U.S. Immigration and<br \/>\nCustoms Enforcement, was charged last month with concealing a crime,<br \/>\naccording to court documents unsealed Tuesday and obtained by our<br \/>\npartners at the <em>New Orleans Times-Picayune<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLate last year, ProPublica, PBS &#8220;Frontline&#8221; and the <em>Times-Picayune<\/em> teamed up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/\">examine a string of violent encounters between police and civilians<\/a> that occurred in New Orleans during the week after Hurricane Katrina made landfall.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe bridge incident was particularly notorious. Police officers shot<br \/>\nsix citizens, killing two. Lehrmann, tasked with investigating what<br \/>\nhappened on the bridge, &#8220;participated in the creation of false reports&#8221;<br \/>\nand provided &#8220;false information to investigating agents,&#8221; according to<br \/>\nthe bill of information filed by the U.S. Department of Justice.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>\nAs the <em>Times-Picayune<\/em> noted, Lehrmann also plays a central<br \/>\nrole in another ongoing controversy: While working as an NOPD detective<br \/>\nhe helped build the case against Michael Anderson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/index.ssf\/2010\/03\/judge_grants_michael_anderson_new_trial.html\">whose murder conviction was overturned<\/a> recently when a judge found that prosecutors had failed to turn over key evidence to defense lawyers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLast month, former NOPD Lt. Michael Lohman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/story\/former-new-orleans-detective-pleads-guilty-in-katrina-shooting-cover-up-224\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the bridge shootings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By A.C.
