In Athens, <em><a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #2b6e8f; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/odysseasgp\">Odysseas<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/odysseasgp\/status\/10316839314\">tweeted soon after the rally had started<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u0391\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac \u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03c8\u03b7\u03c2 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03c5\u03b3\u03cc\u03bd\u03b1 \u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03ac \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03a0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c5\u03c4\u03b5\u03c7\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03bf<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"translation\">flashbangs from up ahead and teargas near the Polytehnic<\/div>\n<p>..followed by <em><a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #2b6e8f; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/panwsk\">panwsk<\/a><\/em>, from the gathering rallies in Thessaloniki, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/panwsk\/status\/10316806683\">within minutes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u0391\u03c0\u03c1\u03cc\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7 \u03c7\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03b7 \u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03ce\u03bd \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ae\u03bd \u03c4\u03b7 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03b3\u03bc\u03ae \u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7 \u03a7\u03b1\u03bb\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9\u03bd!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"translation\">unprovoked use of chemicals right now in front of Chalkeon (church)<\/div>\n<p>From then on, and for nearly 4 hours, Odysseas used Twitter to provide a near continuous reporting of police actions throughout the march and successive skirmishes in downtown Athens, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yfrog.com\/froggy.php?username=odysseasgp\">photos posted  on yfrog from his cellphone<\/a>, while\u00a0PanwsK similarly posted reports from the significantly briefer, smaller and more peaceful rally in Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n<p>Freelance photographers often crowd together for protection when covering protests, which makes them easy targets of police charges. Both incidents happened near me<\/div>\n<p>Veteran photojournalist <a href=\"http:\/\/teacherdudebbq.blogspot.com\/\"><em>Craig Wherlock<\/em><\/a> tweeted his observations from the Thessaloniki rally afterwards, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/teacherdude\/status\/10319219274\">confirming earlier reports<\/a> of unprovoked police aggression,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The police here in Thessaloniki wanted to cause trouble, intervened when nothing was happening in order to provoke marchers #griots<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/teacherdude\/status\/10319642771\">luridly describing the mood of protesters<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>What can u say about a place when teachers have to protect themselves from tear gas and pensioners are so angry they lob eggs at the cops?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 417px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/17wdhb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/twitpic\/photos\/large\/73733951.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&amp;Expires=1268404537&amp;Signature=7U7PFnzFOERiMzNPIqYc1SMHqoA%3D\" alt=\"Gorillas in the Mist (Craig Wherlock)\" width=\"407\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gorillas in the Mist (Craig Wherlock)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Several citizen photojournalists, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demotix.com\/news\/272978\/striking-greeks-take-streets\">Wherlock<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demotix.com\/users\/endiaferon\">endiaferon<\/a>, later <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demotix.com\/search\/context\/location\/Greece\">uploaded  their take of the day on citizen photojournalism site Demotix<\/a>, which had set up a dedicated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demotix.com\/content\/greece-unrest\">Greece unrest  hub<\/a> during last December&#39;s riots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peaceful and violent video reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blogger <em>Giorgos Sarris<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/giorgossarris.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/blog-post_1566.html\">posted  photos<\/a> as  well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/giorgossarrisblog\">videos<\/a> from the massive and initially peaceful Athens workers&#39; rallies, comparing them in participation with the Polytechnic ones, in the  years following the ousting of the colonels&#39; junta,<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 344px; width: 425px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/rL3gTEKYGRE\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed style=\"height: 344px; width: 425px;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/rL3gTEKYGRE\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>while blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/giantakos.blogspot.com\/\"><em>GiaNT<\/em><\/a> posted <a href=\"http:\/\/giantakos.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/11032010.html\">several frontline videos of the skirmishes that followed<\/a> around downtown Omonia Square between anarchists and police after the crackdown, and the ousting of riot police later on from Exarchia square -besieged by police since the socialist government took power- where <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2008\/12\/10\/greece-riots-in-athens-continue\/\">15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was gunned down by police<\/a> in December 2008.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_1CpgbS09IA&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_1CpgbS09IA&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ministerial silence on Twitter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Besides multimedia reporting, many citizens simply used Twitter throughout the day to report and protest police brutality and the heavy, indiscriminate use of teargas in Athens; some, directly to the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisochoidis\">minister of Citizen  Protection<\/a>. Journalist and prolific blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/naftilos.blogspot.com\/\"><em>AnemosNaftilos<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/AnemosNaftilos\/statuses\/10317397135\">cautioned<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u0397\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03bc\u03b5 \u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b2\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1. \u0395\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9 \u03b4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af \u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"translation\">Elderly people and little children with respiratory problems. Inconceivable for citizens to be unable to protest freely under Papandreou&#39;s government<\/div>\n<p>A day earlier, the minister, who had responded to excessive police brutality charges during last December&#39;s riots with -as yet unimplemented- <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2009\/12\/14\/greece-riots-and-police-brutality-commemorate-teenagers-death\/\">promises to ban teargas use and institute reforms<\/a>, was <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisochoidis\/status\/10281706356\">confirming<\/a> the much derided launch of an <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/astynomia\">official Twitter account for the police<\/a>. This time, however, remained conspicuously silent throughout the day and night.<\/p>\n<p>Blogging lawyer <em><a href=\"http:\/\/xasodikis.blogspot.com\/\">xasodikis<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/xasodikis\/status\/10317317230\">echoed a sentiment common among bloggers<\/a>, and reaffirmed with every instance of police-related news in recent weeks,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u03a4\u03bf \u039d\u03ad\u03bf \u03a0\u03c1\u03cc\u03c3\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9 \u03cd\u03c0\u03bf\u03c0\u03c4\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03cc. \u0388\u03c3\u03c4\u03c9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bc\u03b5 twitter account.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"translation\">The New Face of the police looks suspiciously like the old one. Even with a twitter account.<\/div>\n<p>and an unnamed blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/things-i-learned.tumblr.com\/post\/441610748\/people-are-angry-angry-at-bad-politicians-who\">summed up the seething popular frustration<\/a> leading to the vicious circle of riots and crackdowns, aptly enough, in a Tumblr called &#8220;<em>Things I learned<\/em>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>People are <strong>angry<\/strong>. Angry at bad politicians who are stealing their money, angry at  bankers asking them to pay off their loans, angry at journalists for  being corrupted, angry at \u201cforeign powers\u201d for wanting to destroy  Greece, angry at their neighbor for being their neighbor. At some point  the reason for all the anger\u00a0stops having importance\u00a0and what\u2019s left is  the process of setting it free. [..] It\u2019s not just a financial crisis what we live. Causes should be searched  deeper into the society.
