{"id":421141,"date":"2010-03-12T13:18:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-12T17:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.southernstudies.org,2010:\/\/5.12180"},"modified":"2010-03-16T10:28:08","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T14:28:08","slug":"applying-hurricane-katrinas-lessons-to-help-post-quake-haiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/421141","title":{"rendered":"Applying Hurricane Katrina&#8217;s lessons to help post-quake Haiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        Organizations and individuals that were involved in the Hurricane Katrina<br \/>\nrecovery effort in New Orleans are now applying the lessons they<br \/>\nlearned following that disaster to help the people of<br \/>\nearthquake-stricken Haiti.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"a2a_dd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.addtoany.com\/share_save?linkname=&amp;linkurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.southernstudies.org%2F2010%2F03%2Fapplying-hurricane-katrinas-lessons-to-help-post-quake-haiti.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.addtoany.com\/buttons\/share_save_171_16.png\" width=\"171\" height=\"16\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Share\/Bookmark\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">a2a_linkurl=\"http:\/\/www.southernstudies.org\/2010\/03\/applying-hurricane-katrinas-lessons-to-help-post-quake-haiti.html\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/static.addtoany.com\/menu\/page.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Launched shortly after the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the<br \/>\nHaitian capital of Port-au-Prince and surrounding region, the effort<br \/>\nwas initially called the Haiti Emergency Village Project but has since<br \/>\nchanged its name to the Louisiana\/Haiti Sustainable Village Project. It<br \/>\ninvolves more than 40 disaster recovery and urban infrastructure<br \/>\nprofessionals who are working to build an emergency village in Haiti to<br \/>\nprovide housing, infrastructure and other services as an alternative to<br \/>\ncamps.<\/p>\n<p>The project was launched by Jacques Morial, co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.louisianajusticeinstitute.org\/\">Louisiana Justice Institute<\/a>, and Charles Allen III, director of New Orleans&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historicgreen.org\/csed.php\">Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development<\/a> and chair of that city&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpholycross.org\/\">Holy<br \/>\nCross Neighborhood Association<\/a>. Also involved in the project&#8217;s<br \/>\nfounding were Dr. Austin Allen, a landscape architect and professor<br \/>\nwho&#8217;s been involved in recovery efforts in New Orleans&#8217; Lower Ninth<br \/>\nWard, and Tim Duggan of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makeitrightnola.org\/\">Make It Right Foundation<\/a>, LJI&#8217;s Justice Roars blog <a href=\"http:\/\/louisianajusticeinstitute.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/new-orleans-recovery-organizations.html\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\":1am\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;While we can&#8217;t imagine the epic scale of devastation and death,<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ve learned some painful lessons in our own struggle to recover from<br \/>\nthe floods that followed Katrina, and it&#8217;s our spiritual responsibility<br \/>\nand moral obligation to offer the benefit of our experience,<br \/>\nunderstanding and capacity to help the Haitian people in any way they<br \/>\nfind useful and appropriate,&#8221; said Jacques Morial.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The project has already airlifted more than six tons of supplies to medical teams in Haiti, and its <a href=\"http:\/\/louisianajusticeinstitute.blogspot.com\/2010\/02\/louisianahaiti-sustainable-village.html\">New<br \/>\nOrleans to Haiti Barge Initiative<\/a> delivered by sea some 100,000 tons of<br \/>\ndonated medical supplies, tents, household good and food to the Haitian<br \/>\nport of Jacmel earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Contributions to the Louisiana\/Haiti Sustainable Village Project can be made online through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.louisianahelp.org\/haiti.html\">Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation<\/a>.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Organizations and individuals that were involved in the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort in New Orleans are now applying the lessons they learned following that disaster to help the people of earthquake-stricken Haiti.
