Now, House Republicans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2010-03-12-republicans-earmarks_N.htm\">promise<\/a> they won&#8217;t stuff spending bills with earmarks at all. Given Congress&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/taxpayer.net\/search_by_category.php?action=view&amp;proj_id=3193&amp;category=Earmarks&amp;type=Project\">insatiable appetite<\/a> for earmarks and&nbsp;years-long resistance to curtailing them&nbsp;&#8212; see&nbsp;the Center for Responsive Politics&#8217;&nbsp;recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/bigpicture\/earmarks.php\">earmarks project<\/a> created in conjunction with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxpayer.net\/\">Taxpayers for&nbsp;Common Sense<\/a>&nbsp;&#8212; it&#8217;ll certainly be curious to see whether this is election year grandstanding or durable change. It&#8217;s certainly a huge change for lobbyists. The <em>New York Times<\/em>&#8216; Eric Lichtblau <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/12\/us\/politics\/12lobby.html\">reports this morning<\/a> that &#8220;lobbyists and military contractors who have long relied on lucrative earmarks from Congress were scrambling Thursday to find new ways to keep the federal money flowing.&#8221;&nbsp;And politically speaking, this may just be the greatest day in the life of Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/summary.php?cid=N00009573&amp;cycle=Career\">Jeff Flake<\/a> (R-Ariz.), given that&nbsp;the smiling politico&nbsp;in part built his career on a <a href=\"http:\/\/flake.house.gov\/News\/DocumentQuery.aspx?CatagoryID=1766\">quest<\/a> to rid Congress of earmarks.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"MARGIN: 0px 20px 20px 0px; FLOAT: left\" class=\"mt-image-left\" alt=\"monicaconyers.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/monicaconyers.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"185\" \/>REP. JOHN CONYERS&#8217; WIFE SENTENCED TO PRISON TIME:<\/strong> Monica Conyers, a former Detroit City Council member and wife of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/cmteprofiles\/overview.php?cmteid=H13&amp;cmte=HJUD&amp;congno=111\">House Judiciary Committee<\/a> Chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/summary.php?cid=N00004029&amp;cycle=Career\">John Conyers<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mich.),&nbsp;appears headed to prison for 37 months after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20100311\/METRO01\/3110443\">pleading guilty to bribery charges<\/a>.&nbsp;(Monica Conyers says she will appeal the sentence.) The bombastic ex-politico admitted to taking bribes in connection with a vote on a $1.2 billion contract before the Detroit City Council.
