The Internet<\/a> allowed extremists to contact, recruit, train and equip the suspect responsible for the attempted Flight 253 bombing on Christmas Day \u201cwithin weeks,\u201d a top Pentagon official told lawmakers Wednesday.<\/p>\n

That relatively brief timeframe only speaks to how quickly extremist groups have \u201coptimized\u201d the Web and developed a \u201chighly evolved\u201d process by which to develop terrorist networks, added Garry Reid, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnabled by 21st-century technology, extremists have optimized the use of Internet<\/a> chat rooms, Web sites and e-mail chains to spread their virulent messages and reach a global audience of potential recruits,\u201d Reid told the Senate Armed Services<\/a> Committee in prepared testimony. <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is this highly evolved radicalization process that enabled al Qaeda<\/a> in the Arabian Peninsula to make contact with a wealthy Nigerian student living in London, recruit, train and equip him in the remote tribal regions of Yemen<\/a>, position him in the Netherlands and ultimately dispatch him on a suicide mission to the United States<\/a>, all within a period of weeks,\u201d Reid added.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy contrast, the 9\/11<\/a> operation took about two and a half years to develop from the time<\/a> Osama bin Laden<\/a> approved it in April 1999,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
