{"id":425061,"date":"2010-03-13T11:44:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-13T15:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5587346.post-5771673532138223384"},"modified":"2010-03-13T11:56:25","modified_gmt":"2010-03-13T15:56:25","slug":"was-10-3-the-best-version-of-os-x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/425061","title":{"rendered":"Was 10.3 the best version of OS X?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>I&#8217;m just about done reorganizing the home network after shutting down my XP server and moving accounts to the newest iMac.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s been a fairly painful process, due to <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.kateva.org\/2009\/12\/my-i5-imac-and-notes-on-academic.html\">hardware issues with the iMac (now resolved)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.kateva.org\/\">ongoing issues with 10.6<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/notes.kateva.org\/2010\/01\/is-there-club-for-people-who-hate-os-x.html\">permissions<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.kateva.org\/2010\/03\/os-x-snow-leopard-connected-as-mobileme.html\">firewire peripherals<\/a>). Now that I&#8217;ve moved all the shares to the 10.6 machine things are looking a bit better.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Today I finished up by reorganizing an old iBook running 10. That old machine is the least troublesome device we own; it reminded me what a pleasure it was to run the later versions of OS X 10.3. It was PPC only of course, and it didn&#8217;t have all the features of later versions, but it was a high quality product. I think <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avadis_Tevanian\">Avie Tevanian<\/a> still ran Apple&#8217;s development program back then. Earlier versions of OS X had been understandably raw, but by 10.3 it just worked.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s never been as good since. The OS offers far more power, but it causes me far more pain.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Why is that?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My working theory is that Apple lost some key engineers around 2003-2005, and they moved their very best people to the iPhoneOS around 2005. Of course many resources were also consumed by the Intel migration.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With all their billions, Apple doesn&#8217;t have enough of the people they need to make OS X 10.6 as robust as 10.3.
