See our New Report &#8220;The Good Haul&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/transportation\/files\/2010\/03\/goodhaulcover2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-363\" title=\"goodhaulcover2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/transportation\/files\/2010\/03\/goodhaulcover2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"412\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, we released <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/goodhaul\"><em>The Good Haul<\/em><\/a>, a report that highlights how clean freight innovations improve reliability, while also reducing freight-related health and environmental risks.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. freight system needs to be modernized in a way that reduces environmental impacts. <strong><em>The Good Haul<\/em> <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/documents\/10881_EDF_report_TheGoodHaul.pdf\"><strong>[PDF] <\/strong><\/a><strong>profiles 28 projects, programs, and technologies<\/strong> around the U.S. and internationally that do just that. That is, they have simultaneously increased freight reliability while lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>These cases studies include practice changes, like <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/transportation\/2010\/02\/01\/video-with-vehicle-fleets-small-changes-add-up\/\">eco-driving<\/a>, as well as new technologies, like the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.portofvirginia.com\/media\/15486\/pr-green%20goat.pdf\">Port of Virginia\u2019s hybrid diesel locomotive<\/a>. The case studies also include large, planned freight hub clean up projects, such as the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/createprogram.org\/\">CREATE program in Chicago <\/a>and the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanairactionplan.org\/\">Clean Air Action Plan<\/a> at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>None of the projects highlighted in<em> The Good Haul<\/em> are industry standards or have been adopted broadly, but they ought to be.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Funding is one of the barriers to widespread adoption of these practices, technologies and projects. Smart, directed, public investments that demand a better freight transportation system that <em>also<\/em> reduce pollution, can chip away at this barrier.
