You had an inexperienced president <strong>trying to tackle a problem that his  predecessors (one of them his own father) had left to fester since the  first gulf war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hmmm. I&#8217;m don&#8217;t think Americans wanted a &#8220;bold, comprehensive&#8221; response to 9\/11 &#8212; though that&#8217;s exactly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/john-amato\/condi-rice-finally-tells-_b_8975.html\">how Condi Rice described the reasoning behind Iraq<\/a>. I think people wanted to get those responsible for 9\/11 &#8212; period.<\/p>\n<p>And notice how Ross so effortlessly pivots right from 9\/11 to Iraq, as though they were somehow related. Remind you of anyone?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p><strong>You had a casus belli \u2014  those weapons of mass destruction  \u2014  that even  many of the invasion\u2019s opponents believed to be a real danger to world  peace.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More revisionism. Plenty of experts were insisting Iraq had no WMD &#8212; including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/US\/03\/21\/iraq.weapons\/\">the UN inspectors on the ground<\/a>. But WMD <em>wasn&#8217;t the casus belli<\/em>, it was simply chosen for <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/middle_east\/2945750.stm\">&#8220;bureaucratic reasons&#8221; according to Paul Wolfowitz<\/a>. It was supposedly the threat that Saddam would give his non-existent WMD to his allies, al Qaeda &#8212; another fabrication. And the desire to do &#8220;something bolder.&#8221; Oh, and we were gonna <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/article2461214.ece\">kick their ass and take their gas.<\/a> Also.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p><strong>Our nation might be less divided, and our debates less poisonous, if  more artists were capable of showing us the ironies, ambiguities and  tragedies inherent in our politics  \u2014  rather than comforting us with  portraits of a world divided cleanly into good and evil.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So true.<\/p>\n<p>If only Hollywood could be like more George W.
