This isn&#8217;t the first time Phobos has <A href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/24032236\/ns\/technology_and_science-space\/\">gotten its close-up<\/A>, but interest in the irregular moon is rising &#8211; in part because it&#8217;s increasingly seen as a steppingstone for Mars-bound astronauts.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Last month,&nbsp;NASA <A href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/35182959\/\">shifted its focus<\/A> from sending humans back to the moon to a <A href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/32767421\/ns\/technology_and_science-space\/\">&#8220;flexible path&#8221;<\/A> that includes the moons of Mars as potential destinations. The idea is that&nbsp;low-gravity locales such as Phobos (and Mars&#8217; other moon, Deimos) should be easier to get to because they&#8217;re more accommodating for landing and ascent.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Phobos &#8211; a pockmarked, potato-shaped lump that measures&nbsp;only 17 miles (27 kilometers)&nbsp;in its widest dimension &#8211;&nbsp;could well serve as the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/2010\/01\/taking-aim-phobos-nasa-flexible-path-precursor-mars\/\">prime staging ground<\/A> for telerobotic operations on the Martian surface,&nbsp;or&nbsp;for eventual human landings on Mars.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>But first, scientists want to figure out what Phobos is made of.<\/P>&#8230;(<a href=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2010\/03\/15\/2228444.aspx\">read more<\/a>)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/aggbug.aspx?PostID=2228444\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; G.
