{"id":431066,"date":"2010-03-15T18:36:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-15T22:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=79329"},"modified":"2010-03-15T18:36:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-15T22:36:00","slug":"senate-moves-one-step-closer-to-passing-hiring-tax-credits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/431066","title":{"rendered":"Senate Moves One Step Closer to Passing Hiring Tax Credits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate this evening took a long stride toward (finally) passing an <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.senate.gov\/press\/Bpress\/2010press\/prb022410.pdf\" >$18 billion proposal<\/a> designed to tackle the nation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/76460\/congress-warned-not-to-forget-long-term-unemployed\" >jobs crisis<\/a>, voting to end debate on a bill granting tax credits to businesses that hire unemployed workers. The vote was 61 to 30 to block a GOP filibuster. Six Republican senators &#8212; <span id=\":2p8\" dir=\"ltr\">Kit Bond (Mo.), Scott Brown (Mass.), Richard Burr (N.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), James Inhofe (Okla.) and Olympia Snowe (Maine) &#8212; voted for cloture, while just one Democrat &#8212; Ben Nelson (Neb.) &#8212; voted against it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It marks the second time around for the so-called HIRE Act. The Senate last month <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/04\/AR2010030402757.html?hpid=topnews\" >passed<\/a> a similar measure, only to have moderate House Democrats balk because the entire cost wasn&#8217;t offset elsewhere in the budget. House lawmakers tweaked the proposal to include that pay-for, and the new version is what the Senate is considering now.<span id=\"more-79329\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s cloture vote blocks a GOP filibuster by limiting debate on the bill to 30 hours. Republicans, though, are threatening not to allow Democrats to count the hours after adjournment tonight toward the 30-hour clock, setting the stage for a possible all-night session.
