{"id":433072,"date":"2010-03-15T21:50:47","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T01:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogs.courant.com,2010:\/capitol_watch\/\/9.73885"},"modified":"2010-03-15T22:52:32","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T02:52:32","slug":"the-ag-candidates-and-the-doma-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/433072","title":{"rendered":"The AG candidates and the DOMA, Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        Last week, I <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.courant.com\/capitol_watch\/2010\/03\/the-ag-candidates-and-the-doma.html\">wrote<\/a> about a Boston-based activist&#8217;s efforts to get the candidates for attorney general in Connecticut to support a lawsuit by Massachusetts AG Martha Coakley aimed at overturning the Defense of Marriage Act.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Since then, another one of the Democrats running for the office said he would join Coakley&#8217;s legal battle against the federal government.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In an email to Paul Sousa, George Jepsen said he has had time to research the matter and would file a friend of the court brief if he is elected AG.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;I<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; \"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; border-collapse: collapse; \">&nbsp;have had the chance to get up to speed on the Massachusetts DOMA suit, and am fully supportive. As Connecticut&#8217;s AG I would be willing to file an amicus brief in support, and would solicit the AGs of other states to do so as well,&#8221; Jepsen wrote to Sousa. &#8220;<span style=\"border-collapse: separate; font-size: small; \"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; border-collapse: collapse; \">Thank you for bringing this to my attention.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<p>        Sousa&#8217;s group, Defend the Law, will now focus its attention solely on Susan&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; border-collapse: collapse; \">Bysiewicz, the only Democratic AG candidate who has not said whether she would join Coakley&#8217;s effort, although she expressed support for the state law that permits same-sex couples to marry. The group plans to call and email Bysiewicz to convince her to sign on to the Massachusetts lawsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; border-collapse: collapse; \">&#8220;Campaign organizers are optimistic that Bysiewicz will join her fellow Democratic Attorney General candidates in being willing to legally supporting the DOMA lawsuit, if elected Attorney General,&#8221; Sousa said in an email.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;\">A third Democrat running for AG, Rep.
