First Solar Inc. has joined the DESERTEC Industrial Initiative<\/a> as the first pure photovoltaic solar partner in the green-power-in-the-Sahara venture.<\/p>\n

First Solar signed on today as an associated partner for a three-year period and will offer utility-scale PV expertise to DESERTEC, a 400 billion Euro proposal backed by German reinsurance company Munich Re.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project aims to generate electricity in the Sahara Desert<\/a> from the sun and wind and send it to Europe. The first joules are slated to reach European and African consumers by 2015 but complete buildout is not expected until 2050.<\/p>\n

However, much of the electricity is expected to come from Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants, so First Solar\u2019s involvement suggests a multifaceted approach. First Solar has built utility scale projects in the deserts of the United States and Middle East and is building a 2 gigawatt plant in Inner Mongolia, the company’s release notes.<\/p>\n

DESERTEC has been expanding its list of partners<\/a> to include companies in North Africa and Southern Europe in recent months.<\/p>\n

Stephen Hansen, managing director of the company\u2019s European operation, First Solar GmbH, said the company\u2019s thin-film technology will fill a niche in the giant project:<\/p>\n

As a high-performance, low-maintenance technology that can be deployed in stages and deliver clean energy quickly, PV is the ideal complement to other renewable energies already represented in Desertec.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
