{"id":434304,"date":"2010-03-16T13:30:27","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T17:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/?p=73310"},"modified":"2010-03-16T13:30:27","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T17:30:27","slug":"dick-armey-doesn%e2%80%99t-know-much-about-american-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/434304","title":{"rendered":"Dick Armey Doesn\u2019t Know Much about American History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-73314\" href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/2010\/03\/16\/dick-armey-doesnt-know-much-about-american-history\/225px-dick_armey_official_105th_congress_photo\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-73314\" title=\"225px-Dick_Armey,_official_105th_Congress_photo\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.firedoglake.com\/1\/files\/2010\/03\/225px-Dick_Armey_official_105th_Congress_photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a>Dick <span>Armey<\/span>, the former Congressman from Texas and current teabagger, actually grew up in North Dakota &#8212; but he certainly sounds like he was educated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/15\/AR2010031503730.html\">by the Texas School Board.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p><span>&#8220;<strong>Jamestown colony, when it was first founded as a socialist venture<\/strong>,  dang near failed with everybody dead and dying in the snow,&#8221; <span>Armey<\/span> reported in his luncheon address.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No. Jamestown was founded strictly as a <em>business<\/em> venture by a group of entrepreneurial English noblemen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preservationvirginia.org\/rediscovery\/page.php?page_id=6\">looking to find gold.<\/a> And the Jamestown colonists&#8217; &#8220;look out for #1&#8243; philosophy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlingen.isd.tenet.edu\/coakhist\/coloniz.html\">got a lot of them killed.<\/a><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Armey<\/span> seems to be referring to the Plymouth Colony, whose idealistic founders did not want to repeat the mistakes of Jamestown, and thus signed the Mayflower Compact, which called for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mayflower_Compact\">&#8220;submission&#8221; to the &#8220;general good.&#8221;<\/a><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The problem for <span>Armey<\/span> is that the for-profit Jamestown was an epic fail and the &#8220;socialist&#8221; Plymouth was a big success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Armey is also confused about Alexander Hamilton.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p>&#8220;The small-government conservative movement, which includes people who  call themselves the tea party patriots and so forth, is about the  principles of liberty as embodied in the Constitution, <strong>the understanding  of which is fleshed out if you read things like the Federalist Papers,&#8221;  Armey explained. <\/strong>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>A member of the audience passed a question to the moderator, who read it  to Armey: <strong>How can the Federalist Papers be an inspiration for the tea  party, when their principal author, Alexander Hamilton, &#8220;was widely  regarded then and now as an advocate of a strong central government&#8221;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Historian Armey was flummoxed by this new information. <strong>&#8220;Widely regarded  by whom?&#8221; he challenged, suspiciously. &#8220;Today&#8217;s modern ill-informed  political science professors? . . . I just doubt that was the case in  fact about Hamilton.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ahem. Notes Dana Milbank,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p><strong>Hamilton favored a national bank, presidents and senators who served  for life and state governors appointed by the president.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes.
