{"id":435135,"date":"2010-03-16T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T16:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/daily_green_news\/303\/herbal-essences-reduces-toxic-chemicals.html"},"modified":"2010-03-16T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T16:16:00","slug":"herbal-essences-reduces-toxic-chemicals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/435135","title":{"rendered":"Herbal Essences reduces toxic chemicals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Good news for Herbal Essences shampoo lovers \u2013 the hair care company announced it will reformulate 18 shampoos in its line to reduce levels of the chemical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safecosmetics.org\/article.php?id=288\" >1,4-dioxane<\/a>, which has been linked to cancer. <\/p>\n<p>Herbal Essences, which is owned by Procter &#038; Gamble, agreed to reduce the levels of 1,4-dioxane in the shampoos after health advocate David Steinman (author of <em>Diet for a Poisoned Planet<\/em>) filed a notice of intent to sue under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oehha.org\/prop65.html\" >California\u2019s Proposition 65<\/a>. Proposition 65 allows individuals to take action against companies that produce products with 1,4 dioxane levels above 10 parts per million. The Herbal Essences line had 1,4-dioxane levels of 24 parts per million. <\/p>\n<p>Said Lisa Archer, national coordinator for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics from the Breast Cancer Fund, \u201cWe\u2019re glad Procter &#038; Gamble is reducing the levels of carcinogenic contaminants in Herbal Essences. It\u2019s a good step, but even more is needed to assure customers that P&#038;G products are free of toxic chemicals.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The EPA considers 1,4-dioxane a probable human carcinogen, and it\u2019s on California\u2019s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer.
