This summer, Rutgers University plans to offer “Special Topics in Sociology: Singularity Studies<\/a>, the first accredited college course on the\u00a0Singularity<\/a> and associated technologies.<\/p>\n

The three-credit summer course will feature online lectures and discussions every Monday and Wednesday evening throughout the summer and is available to students internationally.<\/p>\n

The textbook will be\u00a0The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology<\/a><\/em> by Ray Kurzweil, supplemented by online articles appropriate to\u00a0individual<\/a> lectures.<\/p>\n

The course will feature online interviews with leading\u00a0futurist<\/a>s and technologists around the world exploring the social implications of these anticipated developments. Topics include\u00a0future<\/a> studies and forecasting, finance and\u00a0entrepreneur<\/a>ship,\u00a0network<\/a>s and computing systems,biotechnology<\/a> and informatics,\u00a0nanotechnology<\/a>,neuroscience<\/a> and\u00a0human<\/a> enhancement,\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a> and\u00a0robotics<\/a>,\u00a0energy<\/a> and ecological systems, and\u00a0space<\/a> and physical\u00a0science<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

The course will be taught by a father-son team, Ben and Ted Goertzel. Ben is the Director of Applied\u00a0Research<\/a> for the\u00a0Singularity<\/a> Institute for\u00a0Artificial Intelligence<\/a> and an External\u00a0Research<\/a> Professor at Xiamen University in China. He also heads up two startup companies, Novamente LLC and Biomind LLC, has written several books on\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a> and related topics, and is an advisor to the\u00a0AI<\/a> &\u00a0Robotics<\/a> Track at\u00a0Singularity<\/a> University.<\/p>\n

Ted, Ben’s father, is a sociology professor at Rutgers who regularly teaches a\u00a0Cyberspace<\/a> and\u00a0Society<\/a> course and is author or co-author of numerous books on sociology andscience<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Students and guest speakers will be recruited internationally. The sessions will be recorded and available for viewing during the semester via the Elluminate\u00a0system<\/a>.<\/p>\n
