This is possibly the best detail that I have seen on photos of the corona.  It is excellent and informs.  We have had such pictures for a long time but these are much better than any others I have seen.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

It also took a lot of effort to get out to the <\/span>Marshall Islands<\/span><\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> in order to have the right location and conditions as well as the right hardware.  I have to take my hat off to those involved.  <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The pictures were taken during an eclipse over the isolated Marshall Islands<\/st1:country-region>, near Papua New Guinea<\/st1:country-region> in the Pacific Ocean<\/st1:place>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Ten times as dense as the centre of the sun, the corona only produces about one-millionth as much light – meaning that it can only be seen when ‘lit up’ during an eclipse.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

The main radiation from the sun’s surface during a total solar eclipse is blocked by the passage of the moon enabling rare viewings of the corona.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Organised by the Brno<\/st1:placename> University<\/st1:placetype> of Technology in the Czech<\/st1:placename> Republic<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, the shadow-tracking expedition took these remarkable pictures to study changes in the plasma.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Professor Miloslav Druckmuller<\/span><\/b><\/a>, 56, who took the pictures, said: ”Even though the reason for taking the photographs was science, the result shows the enormous beauty of nature.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

”The expedition itself is a terrible stress. One single stupid mistake like pressing the wrong button on a keyboard may destroy everything.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

The mysterious corona has puzzled scientists for years – it extends more than a million kilometres from the sun yet is over 200 times hotter than the sun’s visible surface.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The source of the corona’s heat is still the subject of debate, but is likely to include the Sun’s magnetic field and sonic pressure waves from below the sun.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Prof Druckmuller will continue his research of the corona at the next solar eclipse in July.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
