\"basketball.jpg\"<\/a>The colleges and universities competing in this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament aren’t simply hardwood powerhouses. Most are also significant players in the Washington, D.C., lobbying arena, according to a Center for Responsive Politics<\/a> analysis of federal disclosure data.<\/p>\n

Schools competing in the tournament spent more than $12 million on federal lobbying efforts last year, pursuing such issues as research funding, financial aid and infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n

In all, education-related entities<\/a> spent nearly $100 million last year on federal lobbying, with higher education accounting for most of that total.<\/p>\n

Most schools in the NCAA tournament lobbied individually in 2009, although some, such as University of Texas and University of California schools, lobbied collectively through the school system. (For these schools, totals are calculated by dividing the system’s overall lobbying figure by the number of member schools.)<\/p>\n

So, if March Madness success was based on the strength of a school’s lobbying, here’s how the tournament bracket shakes out in the Center for Responsive Politics’ 2010 K Street College Classic. (And Texas A&M<\/a> Aggie fans … you’re gonna be pleased.) <\/p>\n
