Among those highlighting the rapport forged with GE staffers over the years &#8212; and the role GE played in Reagan&#8217;s life &#8212; was author <a href=\"http:\/\/reagan.geblogs.com\/vision-accomplished\/\">Thomas W. Evans<\/a>, who writes<em> <\/em>on GE\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ge.com\/reagan\/\">Reagan Centennial website<\/a>: \u201cHugh Sidey of Time\/Life, who covered every president from Eisenhower through George W. Bush, commented that he thought Reagan\u2019s speeches in England and Russia were the finest ever given abroad by an American leader. When he asked a White House speechwriter who had written these offerings, he was told: \u2018Reagan. They were actually pretty much the speeches he had given when he worked for General Electric.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 8pt; margin-bottom: 2em; width: 500px; font-family: Arial; border: 1px solid #cccccc; padding: 9px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 9px;\" src=\"http:\/\/files.gereports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Reagan_lab.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt; font-weight: bold;\">In the lab:<\/span> Ronald Reagan is seen here in 1954 at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, New York &#8212; which is the headquarters of GE&#8217;s technology development arm.<\/div>\n<p>Evans recalled that \u201cwhen Reagan gave his nationally-televised speech in support of Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater in October of 1964, David Broder, the dean of the Washington press corps, described it as \u2018the most successful political debut since <a href=\"http:\/\/historymatters.gmu.edu\/d\/5354\/\">William Jennings Bryan\u2019s Cross of Gold speech in 1896<\/a>.\u2019 The speaker told the press that the address had been developed during his GE years, when, in addition to his television duties, he spent a quarter of his time traveling the country to speak with the company\u2019s employees and their neighbors\u2026. He had a vision which developed from study and talks with GE workers and executives all over the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 8pt; margin-bottom: 2em; width: 500px; font-family: Arial; border: 1px solid #cccccc; padding: 9px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 9px;\" src=\"http:\/\/files.gereports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IGLA103.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt; font-weight: bold;\">Paging Mr. Reagan:<\/span> At the Reagan Centennial event in Simi Valley, Calif. last night, GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt and former first lady Nancy Reagan flipped through a photo album from her husband&#8217;s days on <em style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> GE Theater<\/em>, which he hosted from 1954 to 1962. Among those in attendance were Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Secretary of State George Schultz, T. Boone Pickens, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.<\/div>\n<p>Among the employees Reagan met during his years as host of TV\u2019s <em>General Electric Theater<\/em> and as our goodwill ambassador was Ralph Garbutt. He started at dawn and would get to his hotel after midnight. And then he\u2019d do it all over again the next day\u2026. Mr. Reagan walked every assembly line at GE. Every single one\u2026 He heard from them their stories of how bright and hard working people can create success.
