{"id":445496,"date":"2010-03-19T00:59:03","date_gmt":"2010-03-19T04:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidkirkpatrick.wordpress.com\/?p=7126"},"modified":"2010-03-19T00:59:03","modified_gmt":"2010-03-19T04:59:03","slug":"3d-invisibility-cloak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/445496","title":{"rendered":"3D invisibility cloak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve had the opportunity to <a href=\"http:\/\/davidkirkpatrick.wordpress.com\/?s=invisibility+cloak\" >blog about invisibility cloak tech<\/a> (seven months on the dot, to be exact), but here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physorg.com\/news188142611.html\" >the latest from Germany&#8217;s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the second link:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Researchers at Germany&#8217;s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology report they were able to cloak a tiny bump in a layer of gold, preventing its detection at nearly visible infrared frequencies.<\/p>\n<p>Their cloaking device also worked in three dimensions, while previously developed cloaks worked in two dimensions, lead researcher Tolga Ergin said.<\/p>\n<p>The cloak is a structure of crystals with air spaces in between, sort of like a woodpile, that bends light, hiding the bump in the gold later beneath, the researchers reported in Thursday&#8217;s online edition of the journal\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the bump was tiny, a mere 0.00004 inch high and 0.0005 inch across (100 microns x 30 microns), so that a magnifying lens was needed to see it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In principle, the cloak design is completely scalable; there is no limit to it,&#8221; Ergin said.
