{"id":446627,"date":"2010-03-19T08:37:24","date_gmt":"2010-03-19T12:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=79698"},"modified":"2010-03-19T08:37:24","modified_gmt":"2010-03-19T12:37:24","slug":"mitchell-back-to-mideast-after-netanyahu-tells-clinton%e2%80%a6-something","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/446627","title":{"rendered":"Mitchell Back to Mideast After Netanyahu Tells Clinton\u2026 Something"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an update to <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/79667\/will-clinton-issue-challenge-to-israel-on-settlements\">my piece this morning<\/a>, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday called Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who&#8217;s traveling in Russia, to discuss Clinton&#8217;s demand that Netanyahu reverse the East Jerusalem settlement expansion that Israel announced last week. That planned expansion resulted in nearly two weeks&#8217; worth of diplomatic tension that both sides are spooling back, although Clinton scotched Mideast envoy George Mitchell&#8217;s trip to the region as a sign of her displeasure with Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>So what did Netanyahu tell Clinton? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/18\/AR2010031805449.html\">No one knows<\/a> right now, but Mitchell&#8217;s trip is back on. <span id=\"more-79698\"><\/span>Jackson Diehl at The Washington Post is under the impression that the Israelis are proposing a <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/postpartisan\/2010\/03\/obama-israel_negotiating_agree.html#more\">don&#8217;t-ask-don&#8217;t-tell<\/a> bargain on settlement construction: the Israelis pledge not to build in East Jerusalem for another couple of years; the U.S. pledges not to be the strictest building inspector. Who knows?
