That&#8217;s what Burlington Coat Factory did this week, allowing its\u00a0main web site to go dark for nearly 36 hours as\u00a0the company performed a major software and hardware refresh, which included an upgrade to\u00a0an Oracle\u00a0app server, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.storefrontbacktalk.com\/supply-chain\/burlington-coats-unannounced-site-surgery-here-today-gone-all-day-tomorrow\/\">Storefront Backtalk<\/a> (link via <a href=\"http:\/\/vburke.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/19\/thursday-data-center-tidbits-2\/\">The Server Room<\/a>)\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Although the outage was planned, the site displayed a message saying \u201cThe Burlington Coat Factory site is temporarily unavailable. Please check back later.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Burlington Coat Factory\u00a0web supervisor Jack Follansbee\u00a0said the messaging on the site&#8221; could clearly have been better,&#8221; but said the extended downtime was a necessity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed a full 24-hour outage to do the upgrade,&#8221; Follansbee told SB. &#8220;Wednesday is actually the lowest revenue day for our Web site.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/?ak_action=api_record_view&#038;id=18524&#038;type=feed\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not many major retailers would take their online store\u00a0offline for more than a day to conduct planned maintenance.
