[\u201cNuns\u2019 support for health-care bill shows church split, Seattletimes.com, March 17]. They\u2019re following the path less traveled in pursuit of clear conscience.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Simone Campbell in an NPR interview said \u201cour perspective is it promotes life by giving 30 million people in our country access to health care when we know that 45,000 people die every year because they don\u2019t have access to health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are the people who work day in day out with people who don\u2019t have health insurance, with people who can\u2019t get care and with people who are suffering because of the injustice within our system. And for us, the mandate \u2014 what we see as the mandate of Jesus in the gospel \u2014 is to respond to people in need.<\/p>\n<p>These nuns have asked the question all Christians must ask: What would Jesus do? They\u2019ve not covered their ears, constricted their hearts or shied away when the answer came back loud and clear. You go, Sisters!<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Darcy Wright, Gig Harbor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Baby steps toward \u2018historic vote\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHurling toward historic vote\u201d [page one, March 19] was the headline in Friday\u2019s Seattle Times. It is bad enough that Seattle has been stuck with a daily newspaper that is much more conservative than the city\u2019s population \u2014 The Times endorsed George W. Bush, periodically proclaims \u201cthe merits\u201d of doing away with the inheritance tax and condemns the health-care package \u2014 but can\u2019t The Times at least separate reporting from editorial opinion?<\/p>\n<p>Are we really \u201churling?\u201d This is a health-care debate that has been raging in this country for the past year \u2014 to the point that most people are sick to death of hearing about the issue. \u201cHurling\u201d makes it sound like it has all happened so fast \u2014 a view surely held only by insurance-company profiteers and the legislators they have purchased.<\/p>\n<p>Ask the 46 million Americans who live \u2014 and die \u2014 without health insurance whether the passage of health reform is coming at a blistering pace.<\/p>\n<p>The proper headline should have been: \u201cFinally a vote on health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Travis Penn, Seattle<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What would Jesus do?
