Yes, ladies, this means you<\/a>&#8220;, Boston Globe, 3\/21\/2010:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the study of peevology, language subdivision, one of the more fertile areas of inquiry is the long list of things that people are annoyed to be called. Not the truly offensive terms \u2014 none of which can be printed here, and all of which have a level of discomfort far higher than \u201cpet peeve\u2019\u2019 \u2014 but the more general terms, whose offense is often magnified when they\u2019re used by strangers involved in a commercial transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Some people hate to be called \u201choney,\u2019\u2019 or \u201csugar.\u2019\u2019 A few feel that any use of \u201chey\u2019\u2019 as an attention-getter is rude (with the classic retort being \u201cHey is for horses\u2019\u2019). Others believe that being called \u201cma\u2019am\u2019\u2019 ages them 10 years. But one of the more widespread vocative peeves, at least for women, is being addressed as \u201cyou guys.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Whether it\u2019s the group e-mail that opens \u201cHi Guys!\u2019\u2019 or the waiter who says \u201cOK, guys, your table is ready,\u2019\u2019 the use of \u201cyou guys\u2019\u2019 for groups of mixed gender (and even for all-female groups) can send the needle on many peeve-ometers into the red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2200\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Later in the article, Erin makes an important point:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">J<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ust to be clear, I\u2019m not saying that anyone, male or female, doesn\u2019t have the right to be offended at being called \u201cyou guys.\u2019\u2019 This is America; you\u2019re allowed to be offended by whatever you choose. You can be offended at not being addressed \u201cCommander SnorkelFritz, Hero Third Class of The Loompian Hegemony,\u2019\u2019 and I will fully support your indignation&#8230;and not just because I want to see your uniform, commander.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And she&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dressaday.com\/dressaday.html\">not kidding about the uniform<\/a>, by the way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Erin McKean, &#8220;Hey guys!
