Ford is getting ready to compete with high-performance compact fuel-sippers like the Volkswagen GTI, Mini Cooper S, MazdaSpeed3 and the Civic Si on a global scale. FoMoCo’s new Global Performance Vehicles department is bringing together Ford’s finest high-performance engineers from Europe and the U.S. to work on faster versions of the new 2012 Focus and 2011 Fiesta.<\/p>\n

“If you can capture enthusiastic young drivers, they become loyal buyers for years to come,” said Mitch McCullough, editor of New Car Test Drive and a longtime contributor to Sport Compact Car. “The young performance driver is frequently the neighborhood expert. Friends ask their advice before buying a car. If a company builds a quality, reliable, affordable, performance car, good word of mouth can affect sales of their other models.”<\/p>\n

Many enthusiasts have long criticized Ford for not paying enough attention to its American SVT performance group but the new organization should change all that.<\/p>\n

Ford has already confirmed that the global 2012 global Ford Focus will get a version of the 4-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine<\/a>. A high-performance Ford Fiesta, most likely powered by a 4-cylinder EcoBoost as well, has also been recently spotted driving around Dearbon.<\/p>\n
