{"id":458656,"date":"2010-03-18T14:04:03","date_gmt":"2010-03-18T18:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.compact.org\/?p=10276"},"modified":"2010-03-18T14:04:03","modified_gmt":"2010-03-18T18:04:03","slug":"west-virginia-campus-compact-receives-250000-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/458656","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia Campus Compact receives $250,000 grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ashley Schumaker<br \/>\nDirector of Communications<br \/>\nHigher Education Policy Commission<br \/>\n304-558-0699 &#8211; office<br \/>\n304-382-3071 &#8211; cell<\/p>\n<p>Charleston, W.Va. \u2013 West Virginia Campus Compact, a statewide initiative sponsored by\u00a0the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and housed at West Virginia University,\u00a0has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation to\u00a0create a civic engagement service learning model involving training and mini-grants to\u00a0partnerships between member colleges and community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia Campus Compact, which is part of a national coalition of more than 1,100\u00a0colleges and universities representing approximately six million students, is comprised of 26\u00a0member institutions, including public and private and four-year and two-year colleges and\u00a0universities. By encouraging civic engagement in higher education, the program provides\u00a0opportunities for students to engage in service learning and community service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;West Virginia Campus Compact is grateful and pleased to receive this award,\u201d said\u00a0Franchesca Nestor, the program\u2019s director. \u201cAs a result of this funding, we will be able to\u00a0create strong links between our campuses and communities, leading to the kind of long term\u00a0and important partnerships that can make a difference for our students, our citizens, and our\u00a0state. They named the Foundation in memory of their only child, Claude Worthington<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Benedum, who died in 1918 at age 20. Grants are made in the areas of education, economic<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">development, civic engagement, health and human services, and community development to<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">advance specific initiatives in West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania.
