{"id":461225,"date":"2010-03-22T18:01:30","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T22:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogs.rj.org,2010:\/rac\/\/2.2604"},"modified":"2010-03-22T18:05:54","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T22:05:54","slug":"east-jerusalem-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/461225","title":{"rendered":"East Jerusalem and Beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        Last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/urj.org\/about\/union\/leadership\/yoffie\/\">Rabbi Eric Yoffie<\/a>, President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urj.org\/\">Union for Reform Judaism<\/a>, issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/urj.org\/about\/union\/leadership\/yoffie\/?syspage=article&amp;item_id=37780\">strong and nuanced statement<\/a> regarding the current events in Israel, specifically addressing the East Jerusalem building announcement and Vice President Biden&#8217;s recent trip to the region. Rabbi Yoffie expressed the URJ&#8217;s position on Jerusalem, which, &#8220;like most American Jewish organizations, supports a united Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty. This means that we believe housing units constructed in Jerusalem by Israel are not settlements and they are not illegal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tenor of Rabbi Yoffie&#8217;s remarks, which were picked up by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/hasen\/spages\/1157653.html\"><em>Haaretz<\/em><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Israel\/Article.aspx?id=171378\"><em>Jerusalem Pos<\/em>t<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forward.com\/articles\/126743\/\"><em>Forward<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/news\/article\/2010\/03\/19\/1011233\/yoffie-urges-jerusalem-moratorium\">JTA<\/a>, is expressed in dictum that &#8220;<strong>a great many things that are legal are not prudent or wis<\/strong><b>e<\/b> &#8211; and building in Arab sections of Jerusalem in the current political climate is one of those things.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Yoffie&#8217;s statement also reiterated the <a href=\"http:\/\/urj.org\/about\/union\/governance\/reso\/?syspage=article&amp;item_id=27520\">Reform Movement&#8217;s enduring position on Israel<\/a>, emphasizing our commitment to a achieving a <b>two-state solution<\/b> with <b>active North American involvement<\/b> in peace negotiations. <\/p>\n<p>Further, he commented that &#8220;if a peace agreement becomes a real, viable possibility, Israel will likely be prepared and willing to compromise in a fundamental way on Jerusalem&#8230;but first, peace talks must begin.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/urj.org\/about\/union\/leadership\/yoffie\/?syspage=article&amp;item_id=37780\">His full remarks are available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>        On the Washington, D.C. scene, Prime Minister Netanyahu is here and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/hasen\/spages\/1158143.html\">will meet with Vice President Biden tonight<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/22\/world\/middleeast\/22mideast.html?ref=middleeast\">with President Obama tomorrow.<\/a> Many are looking to these meetings as a significant and necessary step toward repairing the U.S.-Israel relationship and potentially getting peace negotiations back on track. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary\/rm\/2010\/03\/138722.htm\">addressed <\/a>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aipac.org\/\">AIPAC <\/a>Policy Conference this morning, expressing the &#8220;clear goal&#8221; of both the United States and the Reform Movement: &#8220;two states for two peoples living side by side in peace and security.&#8221; Secretary Clinton also spoke to the <a href=\"http:\/\/action.rac.org\/t\/4234\/p\/dia\/action\/public\/?action_KEY=1127\">threat of a nuclear Iran<\/a>, which she proclaimed unacceptable not only for the security of the state of Israel, but also for the Middle East region, the United States, and the entire international community. <\/p>\n<p>In the coming days, we&#8217;ll be watching these meetings closely and the actions of both the U.S. and Israeli governments.
