{"id":461354,"date":"2010-03-22T18:49:01","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T22:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef01310fccaebe970c"},"modified":"2010-03-22T18:48:24","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T22:48:24","slug":"former-owner-of-l-a-area-pot-dispensaries-sentenced-to-six-years-in-federal-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/461354","title":{"rendered":"Former owner of L.A.-area pot dispensaries sentenced to six years in federal prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former owner of half a dozen L.A.-area medical marijuana dispensaries was sentenced Monday to six years in federal prison for conspiring to sell the drug, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\nVirgil Edward Grant II, 42, of Carson pleaded guilty last June to a single conspiracy count after federal agents raided the dispensaries, which authorities claimed were operated like retail pot stores.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe federal investigation began after a driver who was high on marijuana crashed his pickup truck into a car that had been stopped by a CHP officer, authorities said. The crash resulted in the death of the driver of the stopped vehicle and left the CHP officer paralyzed, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\nInvestigators later determined that the driver of the pickup had purchased marijuana and \u201cmarijuana edibles\u201d from one of Grant\u2019s dispensaries, Holistic Caregivers, in Compton.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>At Monday\u2019s hearing, U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson labeled as \u201cnot credible\u201d Grant\u2019s explanation that he was operating his multiple marijuana dispensaries as nonprofit cooperatives.<br \/>\nAccording to federal prosecutors, Grants\u2019 facilities generated more than $1.3 million in revenue during more than two years in business.<\/p>\n<p>\nGrant has been in federal custody since December, when authorities shut down the dispensaries he was continuing to operate, said a spokesman for the U.S. attorney\u2019s office. His six-year sentence is to be followed by three years of supervised release.<\/p>\n<p>\nFederal authorities dropped charges against his wife, Psytra Monique Grant, 33. A former employee, Stanley Jerome Cole, received probation in the case.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Patrick J.
