Elephants Aloft<\/a>, written by Kathi Appelt<\/a> and illustrated by Keith Baker<\/a>, is a beautiful children\u2019s picture book that uses just one word on most pages to tell the story of the young Asian elephants\u2019 travels to visit their Auntie Rwanda in Africa.\u00a0 Before the cover page, the book begins with a letter written to Rama and Raja from Auntie Rwanda,<\/p>\n

\nI miss you!
\nPlease come
\nfor a visit.
\nLove,
\nAuntie Rwanda<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The book cleverly and simply continues with one preposition word on each page.\u00a0 It allows the beautiful illustrations, done in colorful acrylic, to tell the story of Rama and Raja\u2019s travels in a hot air balloon to see their Auntie Rwanda.\u00a0 They get \u201cIn\u201d the hot air balloon basket, then they fly \u201cabove\u201d the Asian town, and \u201cbeside\u201d one of the domes of the Taj Majal.\u00a0 After they fly \u201cthrough\u201d the clouds, they go \u201cbetween\u201d the rock pillars, \u201cbehind\u201d the waterfall, \u201cacross\u201d the ocean, at night they float with balloons attached to their feet \u201cbelow\u201d the basket & the moon, in the morning they go \u201caround\u201d a snow capped mountain, the elephants go \u201cunder\u201d the water in their basket as they bathe, \u201cbeyond\u201d the rainbow, \u201cover\u201d an African village, \u201cout\u201d of the basket as they finally land their balloon, and \u201cinto the arms of Auntie Rwanda\u201d.\u00a0 A simple concept beautifully done to clearly illustrate these positions words.\u00a0 Young children and students will love to travel along with these adorable elephants as they learn position words.<\/p>\n

Curriculum Connections<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elephants Aloft can be used to introduce and\/or enhance the physical science standard of learning that states a student will investigate and understand that the position of an object can be described.\u00a0 (VA SOL K.4e) It contains six of the position words contained within the VA SOL K.4e (over\/under, in\/out, and above\/below) as well as several other position words.\u00a0 The Kindergarten student will be able to \u201cread\u201d the pictures in order to describe one object in relation to another object and according to its motion.\u00a0 While looking through the illustrations, the student can also describe the colors of the objects in the story.\u00a0 (VA SOL K.4a)<\/p>\n
