Spanish: Salto \u00c1ngel) is the&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><b><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i>world&#8217;s highest waterfall<\/i><\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i>, with a height of 979 m (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 m (2,647 ft). The waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain in the <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Canaima<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>National Park<\/i><\/st1:placetype><i> (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima), a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of <\/i><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><i>Bol\u00edvar State<\/i><\/st1:city><i>, <\/i><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><i>Venezuela<\/i><\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place><i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><\/p>\n<p>The height of the falls is so great that before getting anywhere near the ground, the water is atomized by the strong winds and turned into mist. The mist can be felt a mile away. The base of the falls feeds into the <\/i> <st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Kerep<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>River<\/i><\/st1:placetype><i> (alternatively known as the R\u00edo Gauya), which flows into the <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Churun<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>River<\/i><\/st1:placetype><i>, a tributary of the <\/i><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Carrao<\/i><\/st1:placename><i>  <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>River<\/i><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><\/p>\n<p>The height figure 3,212 feet (979 m) mostly consists of the main plunge but also includes about 0.25 miles (400 m) of shallowly sloped cascades and rapids below the drop and a 100-foot (30 m) high plunge downstream of the talus rapids. While the main plunge is undoubtedly the highest single drop in the world, including the lower cascades somewhat stretches the criteria for the measurement of waterfalls. Some other waterfalls, such as <\/i> <st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Yosemite<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>Falls<\/i><\/st1:placetype><i> in North America, also include intermediary cascades in their height figures, but, in the case of <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Yosemite<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>Falls<\/i><\/st1:placetype><i>, the middle cascades are much steeper and have less run than those of <\/i><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Angel<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Falls<\/i><\/st1:placename><\/st1:place><i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><br \/>In the indigenous Pemon language Kerepakupai mer\u00fa means &#8216;waterfall of the deepest place&#8217;. The falls are sometimes referred to as Chur\u00fan-mer\u00fa, an error, since that name corresponds to another waterfall in the <\/i><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Canaima<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\"><i>National Park<\/i><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><i>. Chur\u00fan in the Pemon language means &#8220;thunder&#8221;.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><br \/>The waterfall was known for most of the twentieth century by the named &#8216;<\/i><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Angel<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Falls<\/i><\/st1:placename><\/st1:place><i>&#8216; after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who was the first to fly over the falls in a plane. According to the British newspaper, The Guardian,President Hugo Ch\u00e1vez announced his intention to change the name to &#8220;Kerepakupai Mer\u00fa&#8221; in 2009, on the grounds that the nation&#8217;s most famous landmark should bear an indigenous name. Explaining the name change, President Hugo Chavez was reported to have said, &#8220;This is ours, long before Angel ever arrived there&#8230;this is indigenous property.&#8221; However on December 23rd, President Ch\u00e1vez clarified that he will not decree the change of name, but only was defending the use of Kerepakupai mer\u00fa.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><br \/><\/i>  <st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Angel<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> <\/i><st1:placename w:st=\"on\"><i>Falls<\/i><\/st1:placename><i> (Kerepakupai mer\u00fa) is one of <\/i><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><i>Venezuela<\/i><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><i>&#8216;s top tourist attractions, but, even today, a trip to the falls is a complicated affair. The falls are located in an isolated jungle region of <\/i><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><i>Venezuela<\/i><\/st1:country-region><i>, and a flight from <\/i><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><i>Caracas<\/i><\/st1:place><\/st1:city><i> or Ciudad Bol\u00edvar is required to reach Canaima camp, the starting point for river trips to the base of the falls. River trips generally take place from June to December, when the rivers are deep enough for the wooden curiaras used by the Pemon guides. During the dry season (December to March) there is less water seen than in the other months.<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt;\"><i><br \/>An alternative possibility is to purchase a package that includes an aerial flyby of the falls.
