(Photo: Brian Nielson)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What single event will unite 3,500 cities, towns, and<br \/>\nmunicipalities in 125 countries and regions &#8212; along with at least 80<br \/>\nmillion Americans? What worldwide action is hugely symbolic yet so simple, even<br \/>\na child can participate?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myearthhour.org\/\">Earth Hour<\/a>, and it happens for the fourth time on<br \/>\nSaturday, March 27, 2010, starting at 8:30 p.m. local time. Just turn off the<br \/>\nlights, and you&#8217;re in.<\/p>\n<p>Landmarks like the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Empire<br \/>\nState Building<br \/>\nin New York, St. Peter&#8217;s Basilica at the Vatican, the Eiffel<br \/>\nTower in Paris,<br \/>\nSydney&#8217;s Opera House, and the Acropolis and<br \/>\nParthenon in Athens<br \/>\nwill go dark for one hour. <\/p>\n<p>New monuments turning off the lights this time include Mount<br \/>\nRushmore in South Dakota, the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Brandenburg Gate<br \/>\nin Berlin, Toronto&#8217;s<br \/>\nCN Tower, the Burj Khalifa (world&#8217;s tallest building) in Dubai,<br \/>\nand the Bosphorus Bridge that links Asia to Europe in Turkey<\/p>\n<p>Countries like the Czech<br \/>\nRepublic, Madagascar,<br \/>\nNepal, Panama, Saudi, Arabia,<br \/>\nLithuania, and the Cook Islands will participate in the light&#8217;s out<br \/>\ndemonstration for their first time in 2010. (Photos: World Wildlife Fund)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In the U.S.,<br \/>\nNew England Patriots quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myearthhour.org\/supporters\/tom-brady\">Tom Brady<\/a> is<br \/>\nturning off his lights, and so is the Phoenix Suns&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myearthhour.org\/supporters\/steve-nash\">Steve Nash<\/a>. Downtown<br \/>\nAtlanta, Chicago,<br \/>\nand Nashville<br \/>\nwill dim. (Photos: World Wildlife Fund)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Why?\u00a0 The power bills<br \/>\nwon&#8217;t go down dramatically with the lights dimmed for just one hour. There are lots of things that take less than<br \/>\none hour but add up to a lot of conservation. <\/p>\n<p>For example, you could start doing any of these things:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/61\/when-to-switch-off-your-lights.html\">Turn<br \/>\n     off lights<\/a> when you leave a room for 15 minutes or longer.<\/li>\n<li>Drink <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/49\/is-your-tap-water-safe.html\">tap<br \/>\n     water<\/a> instead of bottled water.<\/li>\n<li>Put<br \/>\n     your computer in <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/20\/how-to-enable-the-power-save-mode-on-your-computer.html\">power-save<\/a><br \/>\n     mode.<\/li>\n<li>Turn<br \/>\n     off <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/21\/stop-wasting-money-video-games-and-energy-efficiency.html\">video game<br \/>\n     consoles<\/a> when not in use.<\/li>\n<li>Seal<br \/>\n     air leaks, adjust your water heater, and control your thermostat to <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/47\/keep-your-house-from-leaking-cash.html\">lower<br \/>\n     energy usage<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/97\/how-to-save-at-least-250-on-your-heating-bills-this-year.html\">waste<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Go <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/240\/go-meatless-just-one-day-a-week.html\">meatless<\/a><br \/>\n     on Mondays.<\/li>\n<li>Watch<br \/>\n     out for <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/50\/energy-vampires-fact-versus-fiction.html\">energy<br \/>\n     vampires<\/a> around the house and unplug the biggies.<\/li>\n<li>Swap<br \/>\n     out all your light bulbs for <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/70\/three-cfl-myths-busted.html\">CFLs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stop <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/52\/banish-junk-mail.html\">catalogs<br \/>\n     and junk mail<\/a> from piling up in your mailbox.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce<br \/>\n     the <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/121\/energy-vampires-is-it-worth-it-to-unplug-your-electronics.html\">brightness<\/a><br \/>\n     of your TV set to the &#8220;home&#8221; mode.<\/li>\n<li>Use up<br \/>\n     leftovers, compost, and avoid <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/guest_bloggers\/9\/50-ways-to-never-waste-food-again.html\">wasting<br \/>\n     food<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Find<br \/>\n     out how <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/239\/most-walkable-u-s-cities.html\">walkable<\/a><br \/>\n     your hometown is and try walking to your weekend errands.<\/li>\n<li>Fix a <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/15\/dry-to-the-bone.html\">leaky<br \/>\n     faucet<\/a> or toilet.<\/li>\n<li>Use<br \/>\n     the low-water and low-heat settings on your <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/154\/how-low-can-you-go.html\">dishwasher<\/a>,<br \/>\n     and don&#8217;t pre-rinse dishes.<\/li>\n<li>Hang<br \/>\n     your clothes to dry on a <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/90\/wash-n-dry.html\">clothesline<\/a><br \/>\n     in spring and summer.<\/li>\n<li>Take <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/greenpicks\/159\/high-gas-prices-take-the-bus-instead.html\">public<br \/>\n     transit<\/a> to work or school.<\/li>\n<li>Install<br \/>\n     <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/26\/gadgets-that-do-the-energy-saving-for-you.html\">dimmer<br \/>\n     switches<\/a> on your lights and plug appliances into smart power switches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get more ideas for <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/living-green\/\">living green<\/a>, saving energy,<br \/>\nsaving water, conserving limited resources, and saving money at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Earth Hour is only 60 minutes. It&#8217;s a start, maybe a wake-up<br \/>\ncall for some when they see landmarks and cities go dark.
