The organization has attracted controversy and encountered money trouble ever since conservative activist James O&#8217;Keefe secretly videotaped an encounter between himself, posing as a pimp, getting unscrupulous advice from ACORN employees. The group spent a record $120,000 on lobbying the federal government in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><b>FINANCIAL REFORM HEADS TO SENATE FLOOR:<\/b> Coming hot on the heels of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/03\/big-labor-gave-big-support-to-healt.html\">House&#8217;s passage of health reform<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/cmteprofiles\/overview.php?cmteid=S06&amp;cmte=SBAN&amp;congno=111&amp;chamber=S\">Senate Banking Committee<\/a> yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0310\/34829.html\">approved<\/a> Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/summary.php?cid=N00000581&amp;cycle=2010\">Chris Dodd&#8217;s<\/a> (D-Conn.) financial regulatory reform bill on a party line vote, sending it to the full Senate for consideration. In a surprise move, Republicans on the committee decided to offer no amendments, deciding instead to try to amend the bill before the entire Senate. Dodd &#8212; who is retiring &#8212; has been working for months to get a bipartisan bill and will likely need a few Republican votes to get his last major piece of legislation passed. The House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2009\/12\/campaign-cash-from-wall-street.html\">passed its reform bill last December<\/a>. According to a CRP analysis, finance, insurance and real estate companies have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus.php?cycle=2010&amp;ind=F\">already contributed<\/a> more than $100 million at the federal level this campaign cycle. In the House of Representatives, the average Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/summary.php?cycle=2010&amp;ind=F\">has received<\/a> about $6,300 more than the average Democrat, but in the Senate, the average Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/summary.php?cycle=2010&amp;ind=F\">has received<\/a> about $76,000 more than the average Republicans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benwikler.com\/healthvictory.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"historic-victory-health-obama.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/historic-victory-health-obama.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px;\" width=\"233\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><b>HEALTH CARE LOOMS OVER MIDTERMS:<\/b> Today, President Obama will sign<br \/>\n the comprehensive health care reform bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/03\/big-labor-gave-big-support-to-healt.html\">passed<br \/>\n by the House on Sunday<\/a>, and the Senate will began considering the<br \/>\nassociated reconciliation bill. With the main bill passed, many groups<br \/>\nhave now turned their attention to how it will affect the midterm<br \/>\nelections in November. Some Republicans have decided to run on a promise<br \/>\n of repealing the bill, while Democrats are trying to emphasize the<br \/>\nbenefits to the voters, according to the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/22\/AR2010032203597.html?hpid=topnews\">Washington<br \/>\n Post<\/a><\/i>. Outside groups are also focusing on the issue. Major<br \/>\nlabor unions have already made clear they will discontinue supporting<br \/>\nlawmakers who voted against the bill, and may even support primary<br \/>\nchallengers, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/business-a-lobbying\/88423-democrat-no-votes-on-health-bill-anger-unions\">The<br \/>\n Hill<\/a><\/i> reports. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus.php?ind=P\">Labor<br \/>\nunions<\/a> contributed nearly $75 million to federal candidates and<br \/>\ncommittees during the 2008 election cycle, mostly to Democrats.<br \/>\nAccording to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0310\/34833.html\">Politico<\/a><\/i>,<br \/>\n groups on both sides of the abortion debate also plan to support &#8212; or<br \/>\nstop supporting &#8212; candidates based on the health vote. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus.php?ind=Q14\">Opponents<\/a><br \/>\n and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus.php?ind=Q15\">supporters<\/a><br \/>\n of abortion rights contributed a combined $4.6 million during the 2008<br \/>\ncampaign, according to a Center for Responsive Politics tally. <\/p>\n<p>Have a news tip or link to pass along?
