Spammers would regularly hijack popular terms by polluting the search results with nonsensical tweets that included the popular keyword and a link to a spam site. <\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">tweetmeme_url = 'http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/twitter_is_winning_its_fight_against_spammers.php';tweetmeme_source = 'rww';<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/tweetmeme.com\/i\/scripts\/button.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p> Since Twitter started implementing better spam controls last year, however, the number of spam messages on the service has gone down dramatically. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/2010\/03\/state-of-twitter-spam.html\">According to the latest data<\/a>, the percentage of spam tweets per day is now down to under 1%. <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><em>Sponsor<\/em><br \/><a href='http:\/\/d.ads.readwriteweb.com\/ck.php?n=18827&amp;cb=18827' ><img src='http:\/\/d.ads.readwriteweb.com\/avw.php?zoneid=14&amp;cb=18827&amp;n=18827' border='0' alt='' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"twitter spam reduction stats\" src=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/images\/twitter_spam_reduction_mar10.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"417\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According Twitter&#8217;s chief scientist <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Abdur\">Abdur Chowdhury<\/a>, the company&#8217;s <em>Trust and Safety<\/em> team is &#8220;constantly battling against spam to improve the Twitter experience and we&#8217;re happy to report that it&#8217;s working.&#8221; Between May and  October 2009, the percentage of daily of spam messages on Twitter regularly exceeded 9% and spiked to over 10 on a few days. As Twitter&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/report_twitter_made_a_profit_in_2009.php\">primary monetization strategy<\/a> currently involves selling access to its firehose stream to search providers like Google and Microsoft, it is definitely in the company&#8217;s best interest to keep the number of spam messages as low as possible. <\/p>\n<h2>Report a Spammer<\/h2>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\">\n<script src=\"http:\/\/widgets.digg.com\/buttons.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><a class=\"DiggThisButton DiggMedium\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>If you want to help Twitter in its fight against spam, remember that you <a href=\"http:\/\/help.twitter.com\/entries\/64986-how-to-report-spam-on-twitter\">report a spammer directly to Twitter<\/a>&#8216;s anti-spam team from every user&#8217;s profile page.
