Treasury Deputy Secretary Neal Wolin<\/strong> brought his own lunch to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> — a knuckle sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

He repeatedly pounded the Chamber\u0092s lobbying and advertising blitz against the White House\u0092s financial regulatory overhaul, accusing them of being misleading, dishonest, and \u0093backward.\u0094<\/p>\n

He delivered his broadside standing on a podium within the U.S. Chamber while some of the group\u0092s officials sat in nearby tables aghast at the pummeling.<\/p>\n

\u0093Despite the urgent and undeniable need for reform, the Chamber of Commerce has launched a $3 million advertising campaign against it,\u0094 Mr. Wolin said. \u0093That campaign is not designed to improve the House and Senate bills. It is designed to defeat them.\u0094<\/p>\n

He said the Chamber \u0093has an obligation to be honest\u0094 and invoked the organization\u0092s name at least 16 times.<\/p>\n

\u0093As the tea party folks might say, \u0091read the bill,\u0092\u0094 he said.<\/p>\n

After the speech, which received a muted applause, Chamber chief executive Thomas Donohue stood up and called it a \u0093bit of a political speech.\u0094 He countered that the White House didn\u0092t object to the Chamber as a \u0093special interest\u0094 when the business group supported the stimulus plan or the government\u0092s efforts regarding General Motors.<\/p>\n

But \u0093we\u0092re a special interest when we say we want a plan, we want it this year,\u0094 Mr. Donohue said. \u0093The constitution is very clear on our right to raise our issues.\u0094<\/p>\n

It\u0092s unclear if everyone will settle down, but here\u0092s betting that Mr. Wolin won\u0092t be invited back over for lunch any time soon.<\/p>\n
