Reader Kasey Krehbiel alerts us to some news coverage<\/a> of the FCC’s recently released list of seven “critical gaps” in reaching universal broadband<\/a> (pdf) and is rightfully surprised to note that a lack of competition in the marketplace is not on the list<\/i>. Such an absence makes you wonder if the FCC is really paying attention. Most of the other “gaps” would quickly disappear if there were meaningful competition in the market — but we’ve never had a real policy of encouraging broadband competition in the US. Instead, policy has mostly been driven by incumbents who have lobbied hard for exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n
