title=\"ecogeek.org article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecogeek.org\/content\/view\/2358\/\" >that Chevron<\/a>) has just announced plans to install <a title=\"environmentalleader.com article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environmentalleader.com\/2010\/03\/22\/chevron-installing-massive-solar-system-to-run-oil-plants-pumps-pipelines\/\" >a solar power system<\/a> at the <a title=\"kern river oil field, wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kern_River_Oil_Field\" >Kern River oil field<\/a> in California.\u00a0 This ain&#8217;t no small potatoes, either.\u00a0 All together, Kern River is the fifth largest oil field in the U.S. and Chevron&#8217;s solar array will consist of 7, 700 solar panels, according to Reuters.\u00a0 The system is designed to generate 740 kilowatts of electricity to run Chevron&#8217;s oil pumps and pipelines at the field.<\/p>\n<p>The Kern River solar array is just one piece of a $2 billion investment Chevron plans for solar and alternative energy.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a tidy little chunk of <a title=\"cleantechnica.com article\" href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/01\/15\/where-do-we-get-our-oil\/\" >the oil company&#8217;s change<\/a>, which seems to indicate that the company sees the writing on the wall for fossil fuels.\u00a0 Not that oil will disappear, just that <a title=\"cleantechnica.com article\" href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/03\/21\/we-are-thisclose-to-affordable-concentrating-solar-power-and-more-green-jobs-too\/\" >the potential returns from solar power<\/a> and other alternative energy in the retail market are starting to look mighty attractive.\u00a0 Once again, follow the money&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3> <a
