Moreover, Suzuki could take the lead in the group-wide development of subcompact cars and minicars. &#8220;We are looking to profit from Suzuki&#8217;s know-how in small cars,&#8221; said Wittig.<\/p>\n<p>VW has trouble making money on small cars, and is ill-prepared to tackle the growing global market for low-cost cars. &#8220;Where VW&#8217;s portfolio ends, Suzuki&#8217;s begins,&#8221; Wittig says, and he elaborates: &#8220;Today, they are selling 2.3 million cars annually, and they are making money in this segment.&#8221; A new Wolfsburg-based office is currently being created to initiate common projects. It&#8217;s not yet clear whether such vehicles would appear in the U.S., but we won&#8217;t rule it out. We expect the cooperation to start on sub-Polo-size vehicles, which wouldn&#8217;t have a place in our market.<\/p>\n<p>While VW gets cheap cars to rebadge, Suzuki gets hybrid technology. The SX4 will likely be equipped with a VW hybrid powertrain in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-17359\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.caranddriver.com\/suzuki-and-volkswagen-shake-hands-on-long-term-strategic-partnership\/\">Volkswagen bought close to 20 percent of Suzuki&#8217;s shares<\/a> to initiate a &#8220;long-term strategic partnership&#8221; between the two companies.
